Kim Wins the Independent Party of Oregon Nomination!
News Release
SALEM, OR —May 28, 2020—Kim Thatcher’s name will now be on the General Election ballot as the candidate of choice for two political parties in the race for Oregon’s next Secretary of State. Last Tuesday Thatcher won the Republican Primary with 86% of the vote. Her second victory came when the Independent Party of Oregon (IPO) announced in a tweet, “with all eligible ballots returned, the final results of our election are unchanged”. Thatcher, a state senator from Keizer, said, “I’m energized and enthusiastic to earn the nomination of Independent Party members and non-affiliated voters across the state.”
The IPO held a special six-way online fusion election from late April through May 19th, the traditional Primary Election date. Last week, the preliminary vote count showed Thatcher in the lead for the IPO election over the other five candidates. They included her republican opponent and the three democratic challengers for the regular primary, a member of the Independent Party and a non-affiliated candidate.
“The Secretary of State should serve in a non-partisan way that is by the book, open, and fair to everyone,” explained Thatcher. “To me, this position means you are not only representing republicans or democrats, rural or urban residents, but all Oregonians.”
Thatcher’s Democrat opponent, State Senator Shemia Fagan, came in fifth place in the IPO election. The only people eligible to vote in this election were the 125,000 plus members of the Independent Party and the 900,000 plus non-affiliated voters.
